Belfast Sports Volunteer Awards 2010

Belfast 2010 Cross Community Sports Volunteer Award

Image

During June the first ever Belfast Sports Volunteer Awards were held at the Ramada Hotel Belfast.  It was an event to celebrate the unsung hero’s of our local sporting talent. As many people who are involved in sport within our local community know it is the volunteers that really make it happen, whether it is washing the kit, bringing the refreshments, or chalking out.  Mr Ray O'Gorman from Malone College recieved his prize from South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt in recognition for his work in athletics over the last 12 years.

It is with great pleasure that Malone College can congratulate Mr Ray O’Gorman on his Cross Community Sports Volunteer Award.  Ray has been with the College for over 10 years now and although his job role involves transporting students to various venues and maintaining the buildings of the College he also trains the athletic teams.  It is this group who have made enormous strides towards becoming international athletes under the supervision of Ray and his many years of competitive running.  Ray has travelled with parents to events all over Ireland with some of his young athletes, a fete in itself.

The students of the College know Ray as the ever smiling, short wearing, maintenance manager/athletics coach.  Ray always has a calm and positive attitude no matter when you speak to him and his ability to encourage the students is outstanding.  All the staff within the College would like to congratulate Ray on this very special award.

Principal's Address

Message from the Principal

As we approach the end of another school year I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of both staff and pupils in preparing for the end of year exams whether they be public exams or school tests.  Already there have been some very positive indications that this year will bring some excellent examination results.  I want to particularly highlight the Drama Department who recieved a visit from the Chief Examiner of AQA Sue Fielder to view their Drama performance and who commended all the GCSE students for recieving the top marks for their practical of any school in the UK.  A special mention should be made to Miss Anderson and Miss Gibson for all the hard work that they put into preparing students for their Drama Performances.  A2 Art students are also to be congratulated with early indications from the examiner that this years results will be amongst the best ever for the Art Department.  Again I pay tribute to Mr Pendleton, Mrs Fleming, Ms McBeigh and Miss Upritchard.

Very successful reward trips took place for Year 12 and Year 14 Students.  Year 12 had a day out at Dundonald Ice Bowl.  I hope to welcome many of these young men and women back into 6th Form next year.  Year 14 Students who achieved excellent attendance, punctuality and met deadlines were invited to the Eddie Irvine Sports Centre in Bangor.

To our students, friends and families we would like to wish you all a very happy summer holiday and we hope to see you all next term.

Year 8 Induction Evening

BBQ and Induction Evening 2010

Malone College held its annual Year 8 Induction Evening for our 2010 intake of students.  This annual event is organised by our very committed Parent's Council.  The evening is designed to allow students to visit the school meet teachers and staff who will be there to help them through their first year at the College as well as meeting other pupils who will be attending the College.

The informal atmosphere of the event helps parents, staff and students to get to know one another before they start in September and it is always well attended.  Quite often the anxiety over their first day at "big" school is reduced when they meet and arrange to travel to school with other pupil's whom they have met at the evening event.  This year the induction took place on the 10th June and we were greeted with fantastic evening sunshine throughout the BBQ.  Approximately 120 of our year 8 students attended this event and we hope it helped them to feel part of the College already.

Mrs Mitchell Head of Year would like to wish all our 2009 Year 8 pupils a great summer and to our new intake we wish you a safe and happy summer vacation and look forward to seeing you again in September.
